A Bit About Our Farm:
Our farm is run based upon our experience with other farms…but probably not in the way you might initially think. We decided after multiple contacts with multiple farms that we could eliminate all of the negative practices that we observed and experienced, and that we would thus end up with loyal clients that would spread the word about us.
So while other farms only sell their cast-offs and breeding errors; or sell their quality animals at prohibitive prices, we would only sell the alpacas that we wanted to keep for ourselves.
Even from the big name farms, we have taken delivery of girls with eye blisters, bad bite, and horrid fleece numbers only to be told ‘we didn’t know’ when we questioned their breeding, their fleece stats, and the health status of the alpacas involved. One big farm failed to inform us that the girl we had purchased had been having weekly blood transfusions…until they sent us a bill for those transfusions.
There is even a fairly famous farm selling alpacas with inheritable hernias. The University of Ohio will tell you that they are inheritable, but only after you receive the rather large bill for fixing this problem…on your girl as well as on each and every one of her offspring. Fortunately, we have avoided this particular farm but know many that have incurred this nightmare.
We decided to put an end to these horror stories.
Our girls with bad bite stay here, and are bred to males with perfect bite, so that perhaps their offspring are usable. Our girls prone to ‘heat rash’ stay on this farm while their offspring are sold only when we determine that their offspring aren’t prone to this problem. Girls with eye issues or conformation issues stay here. So anyone buying a girl from us gets a girl we ourselves would buy if we knew everything about that girl. Everything.
And there are still too many farms selling alpacas with poor quality fleece to buyers that don’t demand fleece testing first. We test every alpaca every year and keep our records current. You won’t see five year old fleece numbers used for a five year old alpaca here.
Our male program is even more ‘black and white’. If a male beats the odds against escaping our stringent culling program, and appears to be usable to us for our breeding program, we will have a price tag on that male. All other males are dumped as ‘pets’. There is no attempt to sell flawed males as ‘potential studs’. There simply is no such thing as a cheap male. There are good males and there are worthless males.
Our pricing is also unlike any other farm we have seen. Our highest quality alpacas sell for several thousand dollars less than any other farm, including those few farms that do in fact sell high quality alpacas. Our lowest price alpacas are not the inferior stock seen elsewhere, they are high quality alpacas that are just too young to breed.
Our males listed for sale have the highest conformation standards and have demonstrated measured great fleece, and are comparable to males costing several times the prices we list.
As to service, virtually every one of our clients have commented multiple times that our service, quality and information is simply above anything else they have seen. We provide regular meaningful updates on all alpacas boarded here, and a fee that includes all the things that are billed as extras at other farms. You won’t get a ‘surprise’ add-on for worming, shearing, or even ‘birthing fees’.
Further, we will provide you with the information, including the pros and cons of any alpaca here; as well as an insightful breeding plan based upon those pros and cons.
It would have been easier to just say that we treat you better than you would expect to be treated, but that bar has been placed pretty low by too many in this industry.
The result of these practices is that our stud clients keep coming back and our buyers become repeat buyers. Our most ‘fanatical’ clients are, unfortunately, those that have been taken advantage of first elsewhere.
So we hope to add you to our list of loyal clients, but also have the sincere hope that you don’t become one of our ‘fanatical’ clients.
Sincerely,
Aileen and Dave Manuszak
